If a Top-10 of Belgian artists is drawn up, without distinction in disciplines, comic artists will keep popping up.
Belgium is therefore a master in this discipline, which is also described as 'the ninth art', with renowned names such as Franquin (Guust Flater), Peyo (The Smurfs), Morris (Lucky Luke), Willy Vandersteen (Suske & Wiske), Marc Sleen (Nero) and of course Hergé, who made Tintin world famous.
However, this is only a small selection from the group of successful comics artists, of which Jean-Pol was the Leuven exponent.
Jean-Paul van den Broeck (°1943) his first comic appeared in 1963 in the comic magazine Ohee.
He later drew 'De Lustige Kapoentjes' and then made 'Kramikske' and the popular comics of 'Samson en Gert'. From 1995 to 2009, he was also the artist behind the popular bodyguard comic series ‘Sammy’. The latter was translated into 15 languages and appreciated as far as Turkey and Indonesia.
In 1981 he was awarded the Bronzen Adhemar, a Flemish comic prize that is awarded every two years and was named after Marc Sleen's cartoon character Adhemar.
In 2015-2016, a temporary exhibition at the Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels was dedicated to Jean-Pol.
